Blocks of oil in turkana

On March 26th 2012, the Government of Kenya announced that Tullow oil has discovered a crude oil deposit in the Semi Arid region of Turkana County. The oil find was made at a depth of between 846 and 1,041 meters in Ngamia-1 exploration block located within Block 10BB and the oil extracted was confirmed to be of light waxy crude oil

The discovery is a promising first step for Kenya and may be the start of a multi-well exploratory drilling campaign to be undertaken over the next three years,” according to Energy Minister Hon. Kiraitu Murungi.

In the last eight years, there have been intensified efforts for oil and gas exploration in Kenya’s entire sedimentary basin following many years of neglect by Energy prospectors. Exploration interest intensified in Kenya in recent years after oil deposits were found in Uganda and natural gas in Tanzania and Mozambique in what experts believed to be an oil field running the length of the Great Rift Valley.

Amidst rising optimism, the Ministry of Energy has announced eight new offshore oil blocks to be opened up for leasing by exploration firms and at least five oil companies have expressed interest in the new blocks including the giant oil firm Total, Norway’s Statoil, Brazil’s Petro bras, Apache Corporation and the United Kingdom’s Tullow Oil Plc. The new blocks will bring the total number of oil exploration blocks in Kenya to 46.
